Deepening Your Relationship with Christ: How to Hear and Follow God’s Voice

One of the most rewarding aspects of faith is learning to recognize and follow God’s voice. However, many believers, both new and experienced, wonder how to hear from God and discern His guidance. This is an essential part of walking out your faith. This post provides practical steps to help you tune into God’s voice, embrace His wisdom, and make decisions aligned with His will.

1. Creating Quiet Time with God: Finding Space to Listen

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

In our busy lives, we often forget the importance of stillness. Quiet time is essential for connecting with God and opening our hearts to His voice. For new believers, setting aside even a few minutes a day to sit quietly in God’s presence can create a habit of listening. Seasoned believers may want to deepen this practice by incorporating silent retreats or extended reflection times. The more we make time for stillness, the more attuned we become to His voice.

I always suggest having a specific time of day that you are likely to be unengaged or uninterrupted. I know some people like the 5 AM hour, others prefer 12AM. Regardless of the time that you pick that most suits you, create a regimen to meet God at the same time consistently. Overtime, this builds a momentum that is going to be very difficult to break as you grow more committed and experience deeper connectivity with this level of consistency.

It is important to note, the aim is to create the consistency to silence your mind so you can create the environment necessary to create that conduit of communication; for intimacy. This will take some practice, some adjusting and re-adjusting, till you find your flow. Do not be legalistic and hard on yourself. Rely on the Holy Spirit to guide you in the process by simply expressing your desire in prayer and humbly asking for help.

2. Knowing God’s Voice Through Scripture: Recognizing His Character

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

God speaks clearly and powerfully through His Word. Reading and studying the Bible for ourselves is essential for recognizing His guidance. For new believers, reading devotionals or using Bible study plans can help reveal God’s voice in scripture. Seasoned believers can study specific stories or verses related to hearing God, such as the story of Samuel (1 Samuel 3) or Elijah (1 Kings 19), to gain insight into God’s character and how He communicates.

There is no proper way to read the Bible, but we must read for and desire understanding. The Bible is not a text book. It is our guide book for how to live life. Personally, reading the Old Testament is important for fully understanding the New Testament. Spending time in the Apocrypha is essential as well. However, without asking the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what you are reading and studying, there will be limitations in your receiving revelation of the Word. Will you understand everything all at once? Absolutely not, but opening the Word and reading God’s love letter to us, will allow the living “Rhema” Word to speak to you. You will begin to see how God communicates with you intimately when you spend time with Him in the Scriptures.

3. Embracing the Role of the Holy Spirit: God’s Voice Within Us

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26)

The Holy Spirit is our guide, helping us discern God’s will and understanding His voice. For new believers, simply inviting the Holy Spirit into daily life and being sensitive to inner promptings can be transformative. Seasoned believers can deepen their relationship with the Holy Spirit by praying for discernment, wisdom, and clarity. When we feel those nudges to reach out, speak up, or move in a certain direction, we’re often experiencing the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The Word of God says that we should grieve not the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). This simply means that we should not resist the Holy Spirit in His leading, for His Work in us is for perfecting through sanctification. We want to grow in our spiritual life and not be stagnant. The Holy Spirit’s presence in us becomes discernible, even to unbelievers. When we continuously ignore the Holy Spirit’s nudging, we can experience delay in our lives and deny wisdom.

We should always invite and acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s presence in our daily walk. The easiest way to make this connection sure is to ask the Holy Spirit to walk with you everywhere you go today and to be with you– Do so in your heart or with your mouth or as part of your morning prayer/devotion before your feet hit the ground.

4. Testing What You Hear: Using Discernment in All Things

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” (1 John 4:1)

It’s essential to test what we believe we’ve heard, comparing it with God’s Word and seeking confirmation through wise counsel. For new believers, this might mean discussing what they feel led to do with a trusted friend or mentor. Seasoned believers can use discernment by examining the “fruit” of what they hear—does it align with God’s character and bring peace? If so, it’s more likely to be His voice leading.

Thankfully, searching for answers in the Scriptures is less of a task today as we can use several bible apps and search engines to search out a specific matter or question. However, it is important to have trusted spiritual mentors or counselors that you can share your concerns with as well. This person’s life must show fruit in their walk.

5. Walking in Faith: Trusting God’s Leading Even When It’s Unclear

“We live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Sometimes God’s voice won’t come as a loud directive but as a gentle urge or a small step of faith. Walking in faith means trusting God’s leading, even when we can’t see the full picture. For new believers, this might mean taking small steps in obedience, trusting that God will reveal more in time. Seasoned believers may recognize that God’s voice often calls them to growth, requiring courage and trust in His plan. Faith grows as we act on His guidance, knowing He is with us every step.

Learning to hear and follow God’s voice is a lifelong journey, one that draws us closer to Him and strengthens our faith. By making time for quiet, knowing God’s Word, and embracing the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can learn to recognize His voice in our lives. Both new and seasoned believers can find peace and purpose by tuning into God’s guidance, taking each step in faith and obedience. Let us trust that He speaks, and as we listen, our lives will be transformed in ways we never imagined.

This is a lifelong walk. Do not be wary. The Most High God seeks to have an intimate relationship with you. Spending time with Him is only going to make stronger His voice in your walk with Him.
